The additional connection was announced by the government on August 29 along with a reduction in the price of LPG refill by Rs 200. The financial approval has cleared the way for expansion of the scheme.

A government statement said that without continuing the scheme, the eligible poor families will not be able to get their due benefits. There is a demand for 15 lakh Ujjwala connections by August 31.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said state-run fuel retailers will initially pay the cost of connection and initial refill.

The government will compensate them for the expenses based on the actual number of connections added. The cost of each connection with one 14.2 kg cylinder or two 5 kg refills has been fixed at Rs 2,200.
