Guwahati. The flood situation in Assam turned extremely serious on Thursday and new areas have also been inundated due to intermittent rains in many areas of the state and about five lakh people in 12 districts are affected by the floods.
One person has died due to flood. The India Meteorological Department has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ and has predicted ‘very heavy’ to ‘extremely heavy’ rainfall in several districts of Assam for the next few days.
According to the daily flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, one person died due to floods in Tamulpur in Udalguri district.
The ASDMA report states that more than 4,95,700 people have been affected due to floods in Baksa, Barpeta, Chirang, Darrang, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Sonitpur and Udalguri districts.
It said that Barpeta is the worst affected with over 3,25,600 people, followed by Nalbari with over 77,700 people and Lakhimpur with around 25,700 people.
The administration is running 83 relief camps in seven districts, where 14,035 people have taken shelter, and 79 relief distribution centers in eight districts. IMD’s Regional Meteorological Center in Guwahati has issued a warning for 24 hours on Wednesday.
Apart from this, ‘Yellow Alert’ has also been issued for Thursday and Friday. ‘Red Alert’ means to take immediate action, while ‘Orange Alert’ means to be ready for action and ‘Yellow Alert’ means to be alert and aware.
