Atiq murder case: Supreme Court will hear the petition to set up a commission of inquiry on April 24

New Delhi. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the petition demanding setting up of an independent commission to investigate several other encounters including the murder of Atiq Ahmed.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud posted the matter for hearing on April 24. The petition has been filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, in which the investigation of 183 encounters in Uttar Pradesh since 2017 has been entrusted to a retired Supreme Court judge. There has been a demand to get the expert committee done under monitoring.

Three assailants disguised as journalists opened fire on 60-year-old Atiq Ahmed and his son Ashraf while they were being taken to a medical college for examination by policemen in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, answering questions from reporters .

The Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday said it has killed 183 alleged criminals in encounters in the six years of the government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and this included Asad and his associates. In the petition, a request has been made to constitute an independent expert committee to investigate the murders of Atiq and Ashraf.
