Cyclone Michaung: Cyclone ‘Michaung’ wreaks havoc, heavy rain in Chennai and neighboring areas.

Chennai. Tropical storm ‘Michaung’ is expected to intensify and reach northern Tamil Nadu coast today before making landfall in southern Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday. Heavy rain continued in Chennai city and surrounding districts today, causing waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Due to the impact of Cyclonic Storm Michong, Chennai and surrounding Chengalpet, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts received heavy rains since late Sunday night. At least ten flights from Chennai airport were diverted towards Bengaluru due to strong winds. Heavy water logging was seen at Chennai Airport and Kalandur Subway.

Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has asked people to stay indoors due to winds blowing at a speed of 35 to 80 km/hour. GCC said in an ex-post that ‘Dear Chennai residents, winds are blowing at a speed of 35 to 80 km/hour in the city. GCC requests you to stay indoors.

Please do not go out unless absolutely necessary. Many roads are submerged. Stay home and stay safe. Please contact us on 1913 for emergency and rescue.’ Heavy rain is expected in Tamil Nadu on Monday and Tuesday.The state government has deployed disaster response force personnel and set up relief centers to help residents of flood-prone areas.

Deputy Director General, Chennai Meteorological Center, Balachandran said, ‘We have issued a warning especially in Chennai, Chengalpattu and Kanchipuram districts. Heavy rains are expected in these areas. MTC Chennai said that due to torrential rains and heavy flooding on the roads, many bus services will not operate.

An MTC statement said that due to torrential rains and heavy flooding on roads due to Cyclone Michong in Chennai and neighboring areas, we are unable to run many scheduled bus services today. Citizens are requested to stay at home and stay safe.
