Mamata played a trick by talking about giving shelter to Bangladeshis, but the Ministry of External Affairs gave advice

New Delhi. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced to give shelter to the people fleeing from Bangladesh, on which the Bangladesh government expressed strong displeasure. Even our ambassador was summoned and reprimanded. Now the Ministry of External Affairs has given advice to all the states. The spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs said, please do not interfere in foreign affairs.

West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose also advised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to avoid such comments.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “The Seventh Schedule of the Indian Constitution, List 1-Union List, Subject 10 clearly mentions that foreign affairs and all those matters which bring the Union into relation with any other country are the sole prerogative of the Central Government. It is not a concurrent subject and certainly not a state subject either.

State governments should not interfere in matters which are outside their constitutional jurisdiction.”Mamata Banerjee had said in a rally on Martyr’s Day that we will definitely give shelter to those who are fleeing violence in Bangladesh and coming to Bengal. We will definitely help those who knock on our doors. Bangladesh’s Sheikh Hasina government had strongly opposed this. The Bangladesh government first wrote a letter to India expressing its displeasure.

Later, our ambassador was called and informed about this matter.West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose also advised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to avoid such comments. A statement issued by the Raj Bhavan said that no politically motivated populist comment should be made on the current situation in Bangladesh, which may affect the foreign affairs of the country.

His comment came after a statement by Bangladesh Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud. In a video that has gone viral on social media, Hasan Mahmood was heard saying, “Full respect to Mamata Banerjee with whom we share a relationship of mutual interests… However, her statement has created confusion and has the potential to create confusion: therefore, we have sent a note to the Government of India on her statement.”
