Gujarat: 20 people died due to lightning, Home Minister Amit Shah expressed grief

Ahmedabad:Torrential rains accompanied by lightning led to a tragic incident in Gujarat, claiming the lives of 20 individuals across various districts. The State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) reported the casualties, attributing them to the unexpected downpour on Sunday.

Dahod district witnessed four fatalities, Bharuch three, Tapi two, and one each in Ahmedabad, Amreli, Banaskantha, Botad, Kheda, Mehsana, Panchmahal, Sabarkantha, Surat, Surendranagar, and Devbhoomi Dwarka.Expressing condolences, Union Home Minister Amit Shah conveyed his grief on Twitter, acknowledging the efforts of the local administration in undertaking relief work.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipated a reduction in rain activity on Monday.SEOC data revealed that 234 out of Gujarat’s 252 talukas experienced rainfall, with districts like Surat, Surendranagar, Kheda, Tapi, Bharuch, and Amreli receiving substantial precipitation, ranging from 50 to 117 mm in 16 hours. This intense rainfall disrupted normal life and caused extensive damage to crops, compounded by hailstorms in parts of Rajkot.

Additionally, the ceramic industry in Morbi district, Saurashtra region, was adversely affected by the unseasonal rains. As the nation mourns the loss of lives, the focus remains on relief efforts and the recovery of those injured.
