New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Friday deferred a “scientific survey”, including carbon dating, of a “Shivling” found in Varanasi’s Gyanvapi mosque complex during a videographic survey last year.
The apex court stayed the Allahabad High Court order directing carbon dating by the Archaeological Survey of India and issued a notice. The CJI said that first we will see the situation. We have to deal very carefully in this matter. The mosque side said that we did not get a full chance to present our side in the High Court.
Senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing for the Gyanvapi Masjid Management Committee, told the court, “Carbon dating is to begin from Monday.” The High Court had on May 12 ordered the use of modern technology to determine the age of a structure claimed to be a Shivling in a mosque in Varanasi.
It set aside an October 14 order of the Varanasi District Court dismissing a plea for scientific investigation, including carbon dating, of the structure found during a court-mandated survey of the Gyanvapi mosque, adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath temple, in May 2022 .
