T20 World Cup: Bangladesh’s victory ‘robbed’, team lost due to ICC Rules! Questions raised on DRS

New Delhi. Bangladesh team lost to South Africa by 4 runs in the T20 World Cup. An ICC rule also played a big role in its defeat. Due to this rule, Bangladesh suffered a loss of 4 runs and this was the difference in its defeat. After this defeat of Bangladesh, the ICC rule is being criticized.

It is not that questions were not raised on this rule before. But now when a rule in the World Cup itself has become the reason for the victory or defeat of a team, there is a demand to change it.South Africa had given Bangladesh a target of 114 runs in the T20 World Cup match. In response to this, Bangladesh had scored 88 runs for 4 wickets in 16.1 overs at one time. At that time it needed 26 runs in 23 balls to win.

On the second ball of the 17th over, Mahmudullah was given LBW by the umpire. The Bangladeshi batsman challenged this decision under DRS. Mahmudullah’s challenge was found to be correct and the third umpire changed the decision of the on-field umpire. In this way Mahmudullah remained not out.But this is only one side of the coin. The other side is that after hitting Mahmudullah’s pad, the ball crossed the fine leg boundary.

There was no question of scoring runs on this ball as Mahmudullah was given out by the on-field umpire. But even when Mahmudullah was declared not out under DRS, Bangladesh did not get a four. The reason for this is hidden in the ICC rule. According to this rule, the ball is considered dead only after the umpire gives out, even if this decision is wrong.

This simply means that if the on-field umpire had not given Mahmudullah out, Bangladesh would have got 4 runs (leg bye). The umpire had given out, so these runs were not given. That is, one team (Bangladesh) had to bear the brunt of the umpire’s mistake. If this ICC rule was not there, Bangladesh would have got 4 runs and then the scores of both the teams would have been equal.

If the match was tied, there would have been a super over and then any team could have won.Wasim Jaffer wrote on X.com, ‘Mahmudullah was wrongly given out. The ball hit the pad and went out of the boundary. The umpire’s decision of giving out was overturned. But Bangladesh did not get 4 runs. This was the margin of victory for South Africa. I sympathize with the Bangladesh fans.’
