New Delhi. On Saturday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi filed an appeal in the Supreme Court. The petition given by Rahul Gandhi states that ‘if relief is not given to the petitioner, he will lose eight years of his career’.

Because a person convicted of any offense under Section 8(3) of the Representation of the People Act and sentenced to two years imprisonment will be disqualified from contesting elections for six years after serving the jail term.

Rahul Gandhi said that this case has been registered against him on the application of Purnesh Modi. The matter was neither of a serious nature nor came under the category of ‘moral turpitude’, for which such severe punishment should be given.

Purnesh Modi’s lawyer PS Sudhir has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court to ensure that Rahul Gandhi does not get any unilateral stay on the High Court’s decision.

Rahul Gandhi said that ‘there is no evidence in terms of the Evidence Act or the Information Technology Act regarding the defamatory speech or sentence, which has been produced to justify the proceedings.’
