New Delhi. India has invited Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu for the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is one of the leaders of several neighboring countries, including Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, who will see Modi take over as Prime Minister for the third consecutive time.
India had very good relations with the Maldives before Muizzu came to power. But Muizzu is inclined towards China. Due to this, the relations between the two countries have soured. Muizzu was invited a day after he congratulated Modi after the victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Lok Sabha elections.
Muizzu said in a post on X, ‘Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP and the BJP-led NDA for their success for the third consecutive time in the 2024 Indian general election. I look forward to working together to advance our shared interests in pursuit of shared prosperity and stability for both our countries.’
The foreign leaders who will be invited to the swearing-in ceremony of PM Narendra Modi may include top leaders from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal and Mauritius. The media division of Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s office said that Modi has invited him to the swearing-in ceremony.
Wickremesinghe accepted the invitation and congratulated Modi for his electoral victory over a phone call. Diplomatic sources said that Modi also spoke to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over the phone and invited her to attend his swearing-in ceremony, which she accepted.
