‘Super Natwarlal’ Dhaniram Mittal dies; From car thief to station master and then became a judge

New Delhi: Rich Ram Mittal, notorious as ‘Super Natwarlal’ and ‘Indian Charles Shobhraj’, died of a heart attack at the age of 85. Mittal was known as one of the most learned and intelligent criminals of India. Despite having a bachelor’s degree in law and being a handwriting expert and graphologist, Mittal chose to make a living through theft.

Dhaniram was born in 1939 in Bhiwani, Haryana. He is believed to have stolen more than 1000 cars from different states like Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Chandigarh and Punjab. He was so clever that he committed these thefts in broad daylight especially in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and surrounding areas.

According to the police, 150 cases of forgery were registered against Dhaniram.He is considered a master of exact writing. He had obtained a law degree and used to defend his own cases. He also got a job in the Railways through fake documents and also worked as a station master between 1968 and 74. The limit was reached when he himself became a judge with the help of fake letter and granted bail to 2270 accused.

It was in the 70s, Dhani Ram read the news in a newspaper about the order of departmental inquiry against the Additional Judge of Jhajjar. After this he went to the court premises and collected information and typed a letter and kept it there in a sealed envelope.

He put a fake stamp of the High Court Registrar on this letter, signed it and posted it in the name of the judge conducting the departmental inquiry. In this letter, there was an order to send that judge on leave for two months. The judge understood this fake letter and went on leave.

The next day, another sealed envelope arrived in the same court in the name of Haryana High Court, in which there was an order for the appointment of a new judge to look after the work of that judge while he was on leave for 2 months. After this Dhaniram himself reached the court as a judge. All the court staff really accepted him as a judge. He will hear fake cases for 40 days.
