The INS Sumitra, a warship of the Indian Navy, intervened to rescue 19 crew members aboard the Iranian-flagged fishing vessel Al Naimi from armed Somali pirates.
According to the information received, about 11 Somalian pirates had tried to hijack a fishing boat with a Pakistani crew. However, the Indian Navy took immediate action and foiled this attempt by the robbers.Indian defense officials said ALH Dhruv helicopters onboard the Indian Navy warship had surrounded the hijacked ship to warn the pirates about to hijack it.
INS Sumitra safely rescued all the people on board the fishing boat and disarmed the pirates and asked them to proceed towards Somalia.In a statement issued by the Indian Navy, it was said that INS Sumitra was deployed for operations against pirates in the Gulf of Aden.
