New Delhi. The International Olympic Committee has strongly condemned the Delhi Police’s behavior against Indian wrestlers, saying it was “deeply disturbing”.
The IOC’s reaction comes after United World Wrestling criticized the detention of wrestlers during their protest at Jantar Mantar.
Wrestling’s global body had threatened to suspend the national federation if it failed to conduct its elections within the stipulated time.
According to the statement released from the IOC, ‘The treatment meted out to the Indian wrestling players over the weekend was very disturbing.
The IOC sincerely wishes that an impartial criminal investigation should be conducted into the allegations made by the wrestlers in accordance with local law.
“We have learned that the first steps have been taken in the direction of such a criminal investigation, but more steps have to be taken before concrete action emerges,” he said.
We urge that during this process attention should be paid to the safety of these wrestlers and this investigation should be completed expeditiously.
