Srinagar: Boat capsized in Jhelum river, 4 children died, 3 people admitted to hospital.

Srinagar. A boat filled with school children sank in the Jhelum river in Gandbal area of Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir. In this accident, at least 4 school children died due to drowning, while 12 people were saved. Of these, 3 people have been admitted to SMHS Hospital in Srinagar for treatment.

According to the information received, this boat was going from Ganderbal to Batwara carrying children and local people, when it met with an accident near Bibi Cantt Army Headquarters. It was told by the Disaster Management Department of Jammu and Kashmir that the SDRF team has been deployed in relief and rescue work.

Due to continuous rains in Jammu and Kashmir for the last few days, all the rivers and streams including Jhelum are in spate. In view of this, the administration has appealed to the people to stay away from rivers. According to a report from Greater Kashmir, heavy rains along with poor drainage system in the summer capital on Monday led to waterlogging on major roads.

The report quoted local people as saying that most of the roads in the downtown areas including Khanyar, Babademb, Nowhatta have been flooded. He said that the situation is similar in the upper areas of the city including Bemina and Batmaloo.
