Bengaluru: The central government has stopped the sale of wheat and rice to the state governments from the stock of the Food Corporation of India. This decision has shocked the Congress government of Karnataka.
It is facing difficulties in implementing the Anna Bhagya Yojana, one of its 5 guarantees. Under this scheme, it is proposed to provide 10 kg food grains per person per month to all BPL families of Karnataka.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has termed this decision as ‘political’. Siddaramaiah alleged that the BJP government at the Center has taken this decision to stop the supply of food grains to the poor in Karnataka.
He said that his government had sought 2.28 lakh metric tonnes (MT) from FCI for supply of food grains under the Anna Bhagya scheme and on June 12, FCI had agreed to supply about 2.22 lakh metric tonnes by sending two letters .
A day later, on June 13, the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution directed state governments to stop selling wheat and rice from FCI stocks.
