Manipur violence: Compensation announced, job for a family member and Rs 10 lakh

Imphal. The Central and Manipur governments have decided to give a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed and a job will also be given to a member of the person’s family. Officials gave this information on Tuesday.

Officials said that the compensation amount will be borne equally by the Center and the state government. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister N. This decision was taken after the meeting between Biren Singh on Monday night.

Officials said that a decision was taken regarding the announcement of the compensation package in the meeting. In this meeting, it was also decided to ensure that essential commodities like petrol, LPG gas, rice and other food items are available in large quantities to check rising prices.

Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday held several meetings with leaders of political and civil organizations associated with the Meitei and Kuki communities and visited Churachandpur.

Caste violence broke out for the first time in the hill districts after the ‘Tribal Unity March’ in Manipur. On May 3, the Meitei community protested for the demand of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, after which the ‘Tribal Unity March’ was organized.

Tension over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserved forest land had resulted in violence in the past, leading to several smaller agitations.

The Meitei community accounts for about 53 percent of Manipur’s population and most of the community lives in the Imphal Valley. The Naga and Kuki communities constitute 40 per cent of the total population and live in the hilly districts.
