New Delhi: The Central Government has decided to extend AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) in 8 districts of Nagaland and police stations of five districts declared as disturbed for the next 6 months. The government issued a notification on Wednesday. This decision has been taken after reviewing the law and order situation in the states.
According to the notification issued by the Home Ministry, it has been decided to keep AFSPA in force in Dimapur, Newland, Chumaukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek and Peren districts of Nagaland. Besides, AFSPA will continue in the areas falling within these districts also.
According to the information received, the areas under the jurisdiction of Khuzama, Kohima North, Kohima South, Jubja and Kejocha police stations of Kohima district as well as Mangkolemba, Mokokchung-I, Longtho, Tuli, Longkem and Anaki ‘C’ of Mokokchung district. Police stations, Yanglok police station in Longleng district, Bhandari, Champang and Ralan police stations in Wokha district, Ghatashi, Pughboto, Satakha, Suruhuto, Zunheboto and Aghunato police stations in Zunheboto district have also been deployed in the area.
Extension of the ‘disturbed area’ tag to the above districts and police stations had become necessary under Section 3 of the AFSPA. Because the last notification was valid only till March 31, 2024.The Armed Forces Special Powers Act is a law that allows the Army and other central paramilitary forces to conduct raids and operations and arrest anyone anywhere without any prior information or arrest warrant.
