New Delhi. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday praised the New Delhi announcement of the G-20 members and said that it is undoubtedly a diplomatic victory for India. Tharoor said that this is a good achievement because till the time the G20 summit was called, there was high expectation that no agreement would be possible.

Therefore, it may not be possible to issue a joint statement and we may have to conclude the G-20 summit with a brief statement by the Chairman. It is noteworthy that on the inaugural day of the G-20 summit on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that a consensus had been reached on the New Delhi G-20 Leaders Summit declaration.

Shashi Tharoor praised India for building consensus among all member countries on the New Delhi Declaration. Tharoor said there was a huge gap between those who wanted to condemn the Russian attack in Ukraine and those, like Russia and China, who did not want any mention of that topic.

India was able to find a formula to bridge that gap. This is an important diplomatic achievement because when a summit ends without a joint statement, it is always seen as a setback for the chairperson.

On organizing the G20 summit under the chairmanship of India, Tharoor said that the government has actually made it the ‘People’s G20’. Tharoor also said that the ruling BJP made an attempt to turn this huge conference of world leaders into an achievement for itself.
