Sydney. An Indian citizen has been shot dead by the Australian police in Sydney. Mohammed Rahmatullah Syed Ahmed, a 32-year-old Indian national from Tamil Nadu living in Auburn, was shot dead by Australian police on Tuesday.
Ahmed was accused of allegedly stabbing a cleaner at a Sydney railway station and threatening police officers with a knife. The Consulate General of India in Australia identified that Ahmed was living in Australia on a bridging visa.
Police is probing whether mental health played a role in the incident. According to the detective, before being fatally shot by police, Ahmed stabbed a sweeper and then threatened police officers with a knife.
The Sydney Morning Herald quoted police as saying that Ahmed attacked a 28-year-old cleaner at Auburn train station in Sydney’s west at 12.03am on Tuesday.Police reached there soon after the incident, after which he tried to attack two police officers as well.
During this, a police officer fired three bullets. Two of which hit Ahmed in the chest. Meanwhile, a probationary constable also used his taser on him. However, he was immediately given first aid and taken to a local hospital, but the doctors there declared him brought dead.
The High Commission has said that we have formally taken up the matter with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, New South Wales Office as well as the State Police authorities. The embassy said Ahmed had been identified as a suspect in the stabbing at the Auburn train station. Along with this, he was providing all possible help to the police. In this matter, the Consulate General of India has sought a complete report from Australia.
