Police said that intelligence was received about the presence of terrorists in Redwani area of Kulgam district. After this, an operation was started to bring them out of the hideout.
During this time, when the terrorists saw themselves surrounded by security forces, they started firing on them. Security forces also started retaliating. Firing is still going on from both sides. The encounter in Kulgam took place after the Poonch terrorist attack, in which one soldier was martyred and four others were injured.
The encounter in Kulgam took place at a time when political parties were campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections in Anantnag-Rajouri constituency. Kulgam is part of this Lok Sabha constituency.
