New Delhi. Former Chief Minister of Bihar Karpoori Thakur will be given Bharat Ratna posthumously. After this decision of Modi government, the politics of Bihar has heated up. After this ‘master stroke’ of PM Modi, BJP has started batting on the front foot in Bihar.

This is being called a master stroke of BJP before the Lok Sabha elections 2024. BJP has made a big announcement to tap the vote bank of the extremely backward people of Bihar. Karpoori Thakur has been a big leader of socialist politics. RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and Nitish Kumar have carried forward Thakur’s legacy to some extent.

But, Karpoori Thakur getting Bharat Ratna during the BJP rule is special in many ways.According to political analysts, there is going to be a big change in the vote bank of OBCs and backward classes in Bihar. There will be a big change in the politics of Bihar after the announcement of giving Bharat Ratna to Karpoori Thakur.

Now the politics of extremely backward people can overshadow the politics of OBC in Bihar. About 36 percent of the population in Bihar is extremely backward. The caste to which Karpoori Thakur belongs is one of the most backward in Bihar. Karpoori comes from the Thakur Nai (barber) caste. Even today, the social and economic condition of this caste in Bihar is weaker than that of the backward castes.

Political analyst Sanjeev Pandey, who closely understands the politics of Bihar, says, ‘This will definitely prove to be a master stroke of BJP. Because, the population of extremely backward people in the state is around 36 percent. In the recent caste census, the participation of the caste to which Karpoori Thakur belongs is around 1.59 percent.

This caste comes among the most backward and in Bihar, it includes 114 castes including barbers, blacksmiths, potters, carpenters, Kahars, goldsmiths etc. In such a situation, BJP has tried to counter the caste census of Nitish Kumar. BJP feels that after this decision the backward class votes will come towards BJP.

In my understanding, BJP can be successful to a great extent. Because, in Bihar, backward class and OBC do not get along. If seen from the perspective of electoral prospects, this effort of BJP can prove to be a game changer
