Cabinet approves ‘India AI Mission’, government will spend Rs 10,371.92 crore in 5 years

New Delhi. In the press briefing after the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by PM Narendra Modi, Minister Piyush Goyal said that the Cabinet has approved ‘India AI Mission’ with an expenditure of Rs 10,371.92 crore for five years.

The IndiaAI Mission will create a comprehensive ecosystem to accelerate AI innovation through strategic programs and partnerships across the public and private sectors. Making computing accessible to all, improving data quality, developing indigenous AI capabilities, will attract top AI talent.

It will enable AI industry collaboration, provide startup risk capital, ensure socially impactful AI projects, and strengthen ethical AI. This mission will promote responsible, inclusive growth of India’s AI ecosystem.

The AI mission will be implemented by the ‘IndiaAI’ Independent Business Division (IBD) under Digital India Corporation (DIC).IndiaAI Compute will create a highly scalable AI computing ecosystem to meet the growing demands of India’s rapidly growing AI start-up and research ecosystem.

This ecosystem will include AI compute infrastructure of 10,000 or more graphics processing units (GPUs) built through public-private partnerships. Additionally, an AI marketplace will be designed to offer AI as a service and pre-trained models to AI innovators.

It will act as a one-stop solution for critical resources for AI innovation. IndiaAI Innovation Centre: IndiaAI Innovation Center will undertake the development and deployment of indigenous large multimodal models (LMM) and domain-specific fundamental models in critical areas.
