Thane. A surprising incident has come to light in the home district of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, where 18 patients died of different reasons in a single night at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa in the district.
After this incident, opposition parties have started questioning the government. The sudden rise in the death toll sparked an uproar on Sunday from opposition parties, prompting the civil administration to announce a high-level inquiry into the deaths by the Directorate of Health Services.
Eight patients were brought in critical condition. About 70 percent of the victims were over 50 years of age. Thirteen of the deaths occurred in the ICU, leading to rumors that there was a fault in the oxygen lines.
However, the hospital has denied this allegation. Last Friday, some political activists tried to stage a protest outside the hospital alleging that there were six deaths in a day due to medical negligence.
Shinde told TOI that action will be taken against those responsible for the tragedy after the probe committee submits its report. “It is an unfortunate incident and we have taken it very seriously.
We know that the patients were admitted on different days. When the condition of many was critical, they were referred to private hospitals. We have the facts and now a detailed analysis is awaited.
The Health Minister said, “A report has been sought to investigate whether there was any negligence on the part of the Dean. It will be clear only after the report comes. Action will be taken after CM’s approval.”
