Uttarkashi: Efforts have been going on for about 70 hours to save 40 laborers trapped under the debris due to the collapse of an under-construction tunnel in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. The officials involved in the rescue operation are hopeful that all the workers buried under the debris will be rescued safely today.

However, a fresh landslide on Tuesday led to a stampede during the rescue operation, resulting in injuries to two workers. Uttarkashi District Magistrate Abhishek Ruhela earlier told reporters, “If everything goes as per plan, the stranded laborers will be evacuated on Wednesday.”

Eight pipes of 900-millimetre (about 3 feet) length of six meters and five pipes of 800-millimetre radius of the same length, both made of mild steel, have been brought to the exit gate. The plan is that using a drilling machine, both the pipes will be pushed one after the other into the debris, through which there is hope for the workers to come out safely.

From the Silkyara side, pipes will be laid through the debris of a collapsed 30-meter section at a distance of 270 meters from the tunnel mouth. The process of piercing pipes is called shotcreting. To stabilize the heavy debris collected on the debris, concrete will be sprayed on it. Hydraulic jacks will be used to jam the pipes through the debris.

The drilling process was started on Tuesday using an auger machine, and debris has been removed along the way for two days. The state emergency operations center said an expert team of five engineers from the irrigation department is at the spot to monitor the process of laying mild steel pipes through the debris.
