Kolkata: The opposition in West Bengal has launched a scathing attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led government over a heartbreaking video of a man beating two people, including a woman, on the road. What is surprising is that the crowd standing there remained mere spectators while the woman was being beaten on the road.

Opposition parties CPM and BJP have said that the video is from Chopra in North Dinajpur district of North Bengal. The incident reportedly took place on Saturday or Sunday. In the video, a man is seen hitting a woman repeatedly with sticks and the crowd watches silently. The woman screams in pain, but the man continues to attack. He then turns to a man and starts hitting him too. Most of the members of the crowd are seen helping the attacker instead of trying to stop the attack.

At one point, the man grabs the woman by her hair and kicks her.According to CPM and BJP leaders, the attacker is Tajemul, a local strongman who has links with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and is known for delivering “instant justice” for local disputes. It is not clear why the man and woman in the viral video were being assaulted.

The local police have said they have registered a case and are searching for the accused. The Trinamool Congress has said the accused “will not be spared”, no matter how politically connected he is to the party.TMC spokesperson Riju Dutta said, “What the BJP is saying is wrong because they are politically bankrupt, they will say what they want to say. This is a heinous crime.

The Trinamool Congress does not want to know who this man is or what his political affiliations are. Whoever this guy is, the police are searching for him. Strictest action will be taken against him. As soon as he is caught, he will not be spared.”
