Kolkata. According to the fifth list of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced on Sunday, Rekha Patra, who became the face of women’s movement in Sandeshkhali, will be the BJP candidate from Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
The BJP announced the second list of candidates for 19 constituencies in West Bengal, which revealed several surprises both in terms of selection of new candidates and re-nomination of existing candidates from different constituencies.
BJP has so far announced the names of candidates for 38 out of 42 seats in West Bengal. BJP is yet to announce candidates for four constituencies – Diamond Harbour, Asansol, Birbhum and Jhargram. As many expected, former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay has been fielded from Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency in East Midnapore.
His rivals in the constituency are Trinamool Congress’s Debangshu Bhattacharya and CPI-M’s Sayan Banerjee. Similarly, six-time Trinamool Congress MLA Tapas Roy has been fielded from Kolkata-North constituency. He recently resigned from the membership of the Assembly and joined the BJP.
Trinamool Congress has again fielded its sitting MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay from there, while the Left Front-backed Congress candidate in that constituency is the party’s former Rajya Sabha member Pradeep Bhattacharya. For Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas district, BJP has fielded Arjun Singh, who is also the sitting MP from that constituency.
