Amritpal Singh sitting in Dibrugarh jail on hunger strike with supporters

Guwahati: Waris Punjab De chief and pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh and his associates have started a hunger strike in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail. His hunger strike is about ‘lack of access to telephone and poor quality of food’.

All of them have been lodged in Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act. Amritpal’s wife Kirandeep Kaur gave this information to the media after meeting her husband in jail on Thursday.

Showing solidarity with her husband, Kirandeep said that she too has decided to start a hunger strike. Hindustan Times has published a report talking to Amritpal’s wife Kirandeep over phone.

Kirandeep said, ‘I go from Amritsar to Dibrugarh jail every week to meet my husband. Today I also met him. During the meeting, it was learned that all the Sikh prisoners including Amritpal are on hunger strike.

One of the reasons behind their strike is that they are not being allowed by the Punjab government to contact their families over the phone.

Assam Police said on this issue that senior officers of the district have been advised to visit Dibrugarh Jail and assess the issues. They will be resolved as per extant rules in the best interest of the jail inmates.

Kirandeep Kaur told Hindustan Times, “If they are given this facility, then an amount of ₹ 20000 to ₹ 25000 can be saved per family member visiting the jail.
