Delhi Mayor Election: Supreme Court postponed the Mayor election of Delhi, the case will be heard on February 17

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has postponed the election of the mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The election of the mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will no longer be held on February 16. The Supreme Court will now hear the matter on February 17.

The top court says that it is clear from the constitutional provisions that the nominated councilors do not have the right to vote in the mayoral election.Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said that the nominated councilor (alderman) cannot vote in the mayoral election. There is complete clarity about this in the constitution.

ASG (Additional Solicitor General) Sanjay Jain, appearing on behalf of the Lieutenant Governor, said in the court that elections are being held on February 16, but we want to debate the matter of casting the vote of the Alderman.

Let us inform that due to uproar earlier, the efforts for the election of Mayor of Delhi have failed thrice. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had asked LG VK Saxena to conduct the mayor’s election on February 13 and 14. At the same time, the Supreme Court had also requested the LG, the presiding officer of the MCD and others to send their comments on the petition for early election of the mayor.
