New Delhi. The election of the MCD mayor will be held in Delhi on February 22. On the recommendation of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena has given approval to hold the mayor’s election on 22 February.
According to the information received, the Chief Minister’s recommendation came after the order of the Supreme Court, in which it was ordered to call the first meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) within 24 hours to conduct the election of the Mayor and the members of the Standing Committee.
On Friday, the top court had also said that the members nominated by the Lieutenant Governor in the MCD cannot vote in the election of the mayor. Kejriwal had said in a tweet on the letter sent for holding elections that he has recommended holding the election of the mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on February 22.
As per the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act 1957, the mayor and deputy mayor should be elected in the first meeting of the House after the MCD elections. Municipal elections were held on December 4 last year and despite two months have passed since the results came, the mayor has not been elected yet.
The mayor’s election could not be held in the three MCD meetings held so far due to the deadlock between the AAP and the BJP over the voting rights of the nominated members. After the civic polls, the first meeting of the MCD House was adjourned on January 6 following a ruckus between AAP and BJP members.
AAP has a majority in the 250-member House of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi with 134 councillors. The BJP has 104 members in the House. AAP has alleged that the BJP wants to steal the mandate by giving voting rights to the nominated members.
