Mamata backs Akhilesh for assembly polls, announces to fight LS polls from UP

Lucknow: After defeating BJP in West Bengal, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday extended her support to Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav against saffron party in the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. The West Bengal Chief Minister said that though she is not fighting assembly polls in the state yet she would fight Lok Sabha polls from Uttar Pradesh in 2024.

During the April-May West Bengal Election 2021, Banerjee had lost her Nandigram seat to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari. Thereafter, the Bhabanipur assembly seat was vacated by the West Bengal Agriculture Minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay in May, paving the way for Mamata Banerjee to contest the by-poll.

Mamata had won Bhabanipur bypolls by nearly 59,000 votes, record margin so far. She defeated BJP’s Priyanka Tibrewal. In April-May election, the margin was around 28,000.

The TMC registered a landslide victory in the 2021 polls, winning 213 seats in the 294-member West Bengal assembly. The BJP emerged as the second-largest party with 77 seats.
