Kolkata. Sandeshkhali violence accused Shahjahan Sheikh was taken into custody by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday. However, it took more than two and a half hours for the custody of Shahjahan Sheikh as compared to the time limit of 4:15 PM given by the Calcutta High Court.
After the issuance of new guidelines from the Calcutta High Court, the CBI team along with the central forces reached the CID headquarters on Wednesday evening to take into custody Shahjahan Shaikh, the main accused in the case of attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials in Sandeshkhali.
The team of CBI officers reached Bhawani Bhawan before 4 pm, but CID did not hand over Shahjahan to the central agency till 5 pm, whereas the Calcutta High Court had set the deadline of 4:15 pm.The central agency on Tuesday was not able to take the custody of suspended Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Shaikh from the West Bengal CID (Criminal Investigation Department) despite waiting for more than two hours.
The CID had said that Sandeshakhali leader Shaikh was not handed over to the central agency because the state government had moved the Supreme Court against the High Court’s decision.
