Banaskantha (Gujarat). Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed on Wednesday that Congress wants to give reservation on the basis of religion. Along with this, he challenged the Congress and its alliance partners to give a written guarantee that they will never do this.
Addressing a rally in Deesa town of Banaskantha district ahead of voting for the Lok Sabha elections in Gujarat, PM Modi said that as long as he and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are in power, the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes Reservations given to Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC) and economically weaker sections in jobs and education will be protected.
The veteran BJP leader asserted, “I challenge the prince of the Congress (referring to Rahul Gandhi) as well as his party and its supporters to declare that reservation will never be misused in the name of religion. We will never do this, nor will we ever play with the Constitution, nor will we ever give reservation in the name of religion.” PM Modi said, “Congress should give in writing that it will not give reservation on the basis of religion.”
The Prime Minister stressed that as long as he is there, he will not let anyone play the game of reservation. He said, “Congress and its people should listen carefully that this is Modi. As long as Modi is alive, I will not let you play the game of reservation in the name of the Constitution.” Voting will be held in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections in PM Modi’s home state Gujarat on May 7.
