Morocco: In the African country of Morocco, many buildings have been razed to the ground due to the strong tremors of the earthquake late on Friday night. At least 300 people are reported to have died in the earthquake. According to officials, the death toll may still increase.
According to the information received, the intensity of the earthquake has been measured at 6.8. It came late at 11:11 pm (2211 GMT). The powerful earthquake forced many residents to spend the night on the streets.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said it was the strongest quake to hit that part of the North African country in more than a century. The earthquake struck in Morocco’s High Atlas mountain range shortly after 11 p.m.
At a relatively shallow depth of 18.5 kilometers (11.4 mi) local time, the epicenter was located about 72 kilometers (44.7 mi) southwest of Marrakesh, a city of about 840,000 people and a popular tourist destination
153 others were injured in the incident. The Royal Moroccan Armed Forces have issued a warning that more earthquakes may occur. A resident told Reuters news agency that some buildings in Marrakesh’s old city had collapsed.
