Taipei: An earthquake of 7.2 magnitude occurred in Taiwan’s coastal region on Wednesday morning, shaking the capital Taipei. The earthquake caused power outages in many parts of the city and a tsunami warning has been issued for southern Japan and the islands of the Philippines.

Several buildings have collapsed in eastern Taiwan, although there is no information yet on casualties.Tsunami warnings have been issued in Taiwan and Okinawa, Japan and the Philippines. Internet shutdown has been reported in Taiwan. Taiwan television stations showed footage of some collapsed buildings in Hualien, near the epicenter, and media reported that some people were trapped.

According to a Reuters eyewitness, the earthquake was felt as far as Shanghai.Taiwan’s Central Meteorological Administration said the quake’s epicenter was in waters off the east coast of Taiwan island, just off the coast of the eastern county of Hualien.

Japan issued evacuation advisories for coastal areas of the southern prefecture of Okinawa. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, tsunami waves of up to 3 meters are expected to reach large areas of the south-west coast of Japan.
