Abdul Muhari, a spokesman for the country’s disaster mitigation agency, told Reuters on Saturday that the quake caused minor damage to hundreds of homes, some offices, health and education facilities spread across the region in Central Java province.

The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 25 km (15 mi), was felt in several cities in the Yogyakarta region, as well as in East and Central Java, Indonesia’s most populous island.

No tsunami warning has been issued. Earthquakes are common in Indonesia because it is located in a seismically active region.

Indonesia, in Southeast Asia, lies on the so-called ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’, a highly active seismic zone where different plates on the Earth’s crust meet and generate a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes.
