At the same time, there has been an increase of more than 21 percent in deaths due to Covid. According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 10,000 people have been hospitalized due to Covid in a week.

In view of the increasing Covid cases, people in some schools, hospitals and businesses have been asked to wear masks again. CDC Director Mandy Cohen warned that COVID remains risky for people who have not been vaccinated.

The risk is especially high for individuals who have not been vaccinated. At the same time, those who have not had the infection before and who are older or suffering from health related problems may also be at risk.

The report late Thursday night said, ‘About 70 percent of the people admitted to the hospital are 65 years of age and older.’ Health officials are keeping an eye on two new variants. The Omicron variant EG.5 (Aris) is dominant in the US and BA.2.86 is starting to spread.

The CDC warned last week that BA.2.86 may be more capable of causing infection in people who have previously had Covid infection or vaccination. The report said that people in some institutions across the country have been asked to wear masks temporarily.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated EG.5 or Aeris as a ‘variant of interest’ due to the increase in cases globally. According to WHO, the largest share of EG.5 sequences is from China (30.6 percent). However, it believes the variant does not pose any significant risk.
