Islamabad: The victory of former President Asif Ali Zardari in the presidential election to be held in Pakistan on Saturday (March 9) is considered almost certain. If Zardari wins the elections, he will be the 14th President of Pakistan. The 5-year tenure of the current President of Pakistan, Dr.
Arif Alvi, ended last year. However, he remained in office till the formation of the new electoral college.Now Pakistan will get a new President. Businessman-turned-politician Asif Ali Zardari is the husband of late leader Benazir Bhutto. Zardari, 68, co-chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), is supported by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led coalition government, which has the required numbers for a majority.
Asif Ali Zardari has previously held the post of President of Pakistan from 2008 to 2013 and he will also be the first Pakistani citizen to be elected President for the second time. Pashtunkha Milli Awami Party (PKMAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai is also contesting for the presidency.
He is contesting the elections from Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).Achakzai is challenging Zardari in this election. This council has emerged after independent candidates supported by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) joined the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).
